Matt Bellamy never really wanted to be a singer. Now he fronts one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Muse. Six albums deep, multiple number-one records and a handful or two of awards later, rest assured Bellamy can be happy with his decision. The UK trio’s latest LP is The 2nd Law, in which they’ve pushed the boundaries and offered up a few surprises, including a track inspired by dubstep king Skrillex. Fresh from touring the album around Europe, Muse have announced that it will be Australia’s turn come November and December 2013. We caught up with Bellamy to chat about everything from the forthcoming Oz tour to adopting different personas… and how pyramids can save the world.

BROODS INTERVIEW

By Pip Cowley

[V]’s Buzz Artist for the month of April is Caleb and Georgia Nott aka BROODS - a name you can expect to be hearing a lot of in 2014. Soon after posting their first song ‘Bridges’ on SoundCloud earlier this year, the Kiwi brother/sister duo were the next hot property for record labels to fight over. Collaborating on their debut EP with now Grammy Award-winning producer Joel Little, who co-wrote Lorde’s debut album, was a no brainer. The result is organic, dark yet dreamy electro pop, which shows off Georgia’s crystalising vocals and Caleb’s masterful compostion.

We caught up with the multi-instrumentalist Caleb to talk about BROODS’ first EP, performing at Abbey Road, recording through Frank Sinatra’s microphone and what’s in store for their debut album.

UK electronic outfit Disclosure produce the kind of music that’s leaving dancefloors around the world covered in sweat. The brother duo consists of Guy and Howard Lawrence who grew up in Surrey with a mum who made radio jingles and a dad who played in bands. After releasing ‘Latch’, what was to be the first single from their upcoming debut LP Settle, these guys have totally blown up. Since then, Disclosure have released the ridiculously catchy singles ‘White Noise’ featuring AlunaGeorge and ‘You & Me’ featuring Eliza Doolittle, both climbing the UK singles charts. We caught up with the younger of the pair, Howard, to talk about the new album, reviving garage and plans to tour Oz later this year.

JAGWAR MA INTERVIEW

Joining [V]’s Buzz Artist Splendour Edition is Sydney duo Jagwar Ma, who have just dropped their debut album Howlin to much acclaim. Getting the nod of approval from former Oasis legend Noel Gallagher and landing support slots with Foals and The xx, these guys are taking off with their mix of Madchester and Baggy music. Led by Jono Ma, former Lost Valentinos member and ex-Ghostwood frontman Gab Winterfield, it hasn’t been all sunshine during what is an exceptionally busy and exciting time for the band, having to cancel plenty of shows due to Jono Ma being seriously unwell and even considering bringing in a replacement until he recovers. We caught up with Ma while he was resting up in Sydney to talk about the new album, recording in France, working on Aussie film Animal Kingdom and returning to this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival.

FIDLAR INTERVIEW

Fuck It Dog, Life’s A Risk” AKA FIDLAR is a phrase that aptly describes the attitude formed by this LA skate punk quartet. Their music is raw, fast, loud, packed with energy and their lyrics talk about getting f**ked up and taking too many drugs. Zac Carper, Elvis Kuehn, Brandon Schwartzel, and Max Kuehn originally came together while jamming after hours in Rob Schnaph’s studio Kingsize Labs in LA, who’s known for his work with Beck, Foo Fighters and Powderfinger. Now FIDLAR is a full time gig for the lads who have toured with the likes of Black Lips, OFF! and The Hives. We caught up with bassist Brandon Schwartzel to talk about how they started out, partying and coming out to Oz for this year’s Splendour In The Grass.
